Of Mice and Men - Lennie (character foil)

The quote "a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws" (Steinbeck 2). This quote tells the way Lennie walks how similar it is to a bears this quote also tells that he is a very large man. The quote "drank with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse" (Steinbeck 3) in this quote it describes the way Lennie drinks his water,  so far all the quotes describe him having some sort of animal quality. "He can put up a four hundred pound bale" (Steinbeck 22). This quote shows that Lennie is very strong. Bale is a large package made for shipping.

  1. I did George, who is the character foil of Lennie. For example, it says that George "was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features" (Steinbeck 2). It contrasts Lennie who is large and has sloping features rather than sharp ones. George has more intelligence than Lennie. When examining the water he says "'Don't really seem to be running, though. You never oughtta drink water when it ain't running'" (Steinbeck 3). It is also shown that George is smarter because George says "'I'll give him the work tickets, but you ain't gonna say a word. You jus' stand there and don't say nothing. If he finds out what a crazy [man] you are, we won't get no job'" (Steinbeck 6). This shows that Lennie is the 'speak before thinking' type of person.
